Abigail is known in the bible as a woman of God, of good understanding, a beautiful appearance and the wife of Nabel. Nabel was very rich, but harsh and evil. He was shearing sheep one day and David (the one anointed by God and chosen to be king) was in the wilderness and heard about it and sent his men to ask Nabel for food because he had watched over Nabel shepherd when they were in the wilderness. At this time David was a fugitive running from his master Saul who grew envious of him and tried to kill him but the Lord was with David, so he was unsuccessful. Nabel refused to feed David and his men, so David decided he would kill Nabel and everyone in his house even though he was a man of God.
Abigail heard about what her husband did and she decided to meet them and give them food because it was the right thing to do as a women who loved the Lord. David left to attack Nabel and ran into Abigail and they talked for a while. Abigail pleaded with David to overlook her husband because he was foolish just as his name states and that throughout all his days no evil has been found in him and to let the Lord deal with Nabel. David thanked her for keeping him from fighting evil with evil and that she is a respected person and wouldn’t be harmed. Nabel was drunk when Abigail returned home, so she told him the next morning what took place and his heart turned stone, then 10 days later the Lord struck and killed him.
Abigail was married to a man who was evil and a drunkered, but she didn’t let that change her or affect her relationship with the Lord. Standing by what you believe in and staying true to yourself can be a challenge sometimes in a relationship. We can take on the actions and ways of our partners sometimes if we aren’t careful. Abigail's love for the Lord was deeper than that for her husband and that made her do right. Putting the Lord first not only saved her life, but God replaced an evil man (Nabel) with one that loved the Lord the way she did.
Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, and he shall give you the desires of your heart.
Bible Reference: 1 Samuel 25:2-42
