Jael means wild or mountain goat or gazelle.
Judges 4 is where we meet her.
Deborah the prophetess judge sent for Barak and told him that it was God's will that he should lead her forces and deliver the country. But that didn't happen at Barak's hands.
One sister' prophecy of a woman getting the honor of killing a captain in the army, while another killed that captain and her name was honored in the Song of Deborah.(Judges 5)
This story makes me sad and it empowers me but I wonder is it faith or trickery or a little of both? Sad because at first read you see the trickery of Jael, she met Sisera with hospitality and probably a smiling face and murder in her heart. Yes, Sisera terrorized Israel for many years. She invited him in, hid him and fed him. After he fell asleep she drove a peg through his temple.
Jael was pronounced as heroine and became part of Deborah's song.
Blessed above women shall be Jael. Where else in the Bible have we heard such a title assigned to a women? Blessed are you among women; that's right Mary, the mother of Jesus.
We could learn a lesson from Jael about being courageous enough to put ourselves in harms way to obey God and how to keep our faith. Be the hero or shero you were destined to be.
